Steps for Planting Cuttings in Early Spring

view 183

Early spring is considered the most suitable time for propagating many fruit and ornamental plants by cuttings. During this period, the soil has sufficient moisture and the beginning of vegetation in plants helps the formation of roots. Proper planting and care of cuttings allow obtaining a high number of seedlings. First, the cuttings should be taken from healthy and high-quality plants. Usually, cuttings are selected from one-year-old mature shoots. Their length should be about 20–30 cm and contain 3–5 buds. The lower part of the cutting is cut at an angle just below the bud, while the upper part is cut straight above the bud. This method helps the cutting absorb water well and form roots faster. The area where the cuttings will be planted should be prepared in advance. The soil should be loose, fertile, and well cultivated. For this purpose, the soil is dug to a depth of 25–30 cm, weeds are removed, and organic fertilizers such as humus or compost are added. After that, the soil is leveled and rows for planting are prepared. Before planting, it is recommended to soak the cuttings in water for several hours. This allows them to absorb moisture and accelerates the root formation process. In some cases, using root-stimulating substances also gives good results. Cuttings are usually planted in the soil at a 45-degree angle. During planting, 2–3 buds should remain in the soil and 1–2 buds should stay above the soil surface. The distance between cuttings should be 15–20 cm, while the distance between rows should be 60–70 cm. After planting, the cuttings are watered immediately and the soil is slightly compacted. During further care, it is important to maintain soil moisture, remove weeds, and loosen the soil regularly. Under favorable conditions, the cuttings develop roots within 3–4 weeks, and young seedlings begin to grow.
