According to specialists, the most favorable season for planting sweet cherry is autumn, especially October–November. During this period, the seedlings are able to root well over the winter and grow rapidly in spring. Planting is also possible in spring — in March and April — however, the weather should not be cold.
Sweet cherry seedlings are sold in two forms on the market. Potted seedlings are grown in greenhouses, and their root system develops inside the container. This method prevents root damage and allows planting throughout the year. Bare-root seedlings are sold only in autumn and spring and, since they are grown in open fields, they are more resistant to climate fluctuations.
🇺🇿Specialists recommend paying special attention to pollination in order to increase fruit yield in sweet cherry orchards. The reason is that some varieties cannot self-pollinate. Therefore, having an additional sweet cherry tree in the planting area significantly increases the harvest.
Practical planting recommendations:
— seedlings should be planted in a sunny and wind-protected location;
— the soil should not be too heavy or excessively wet;
— the planting hole should be twice as wide as the root ball and one-third deeper;
— a mixture of compost and fertilizers accelerates rooting;
— after planting, the seedling should be supported upright with stakes;
— in the first years, especially in summer, regular watering is required.
Specialists note that the natural vitamins and antioxidants contained in sweet cherry are important for human health, and products made from it help strengthen the immune system, support heart function, and positively affect vision.
