Interesting information about the sweet potato plant

view 123

Sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) is a perennial, heat-loving plant belonging to the morning glory family. Its homeland is Mexico and Central America. As a food product, it is used in the canning industry, starch and syrup production, and alcohol manufacturing. It has also been cultivated in China since ancient times.
Sweet potatoes are grown in Japan, the United States, Spain, India and many other countries, as well as in Transcaucasia and Central Asia (Turkmenistan, Tajikistan). Its yield is about 200–300 centners per hectare. Sweet potatoes are propagated by cuttings. In February–March, cuttings are prepared in greenhouses from sprouts that grow from the tubers, and they are rooted in hotbeds. The seedlings are planted in May, leaving 70–80 cm between rows and 30–40 cm between plants. The soil around the plants is loosened and fertilized regularly, and the crop is irrigated 12–14 times during the growing season. In September–October, the vines are cut first, and then the tubers are dug up.
The vines (in green form, dried, or ensiled) are considered a good feed for livestock.
