According to medical experts, to stay healthy, a person should consume an average of 10 kg of poultry meat and over 100 eggs per year. Chicken meat and eggs are considered dietary products. When choosing breeds for home farming, the most efficient egg-laying breeds are Lohmann, Dekalb, Hisex, Hy-Line, and Rodonit. Currently, about 70% of eggs on the market come from the Lohmann breed, which can produce up to 270 eggs per year. Meat-type chickens (broilers) are fast-growing birds that reach a weight of 2.3–2.5 kg within 38–42 days. The most common crosses are Ross–308, Cobb, Hubbard, Cornish, and White Plymouth Rock. Broilers are ready for slaughter in 5–6 weeks; otherwise, they begin to lose weight. Chicken meat is easily digestible, containing about 20% protein and 10–12% fat, with a digestibility rate of 94–95%. Chickens are fed with dry mixed feed. The average feed consumption is: egg-laying hen — 50 kg/year, meat chicken — 65 kg/year, broiler up to 2 months — 4.7 kg, and egg-breed chick up to 5 months — 11.8 kg. For chick hatching, 1 rooster is enough for 8–12 hens. Chickens can easily eat wheat, corn, vegetables, and even melon and watermelon rinds.
